Why visiting the hygienist is important

We believe that is better to prevent problems with your teeth rather than have to resort to treatment. Regular visits to our hygienist will reduce the risk of gum disease and tooth decay. We will also advise you on the best ways to look after your teeth, and how to establish a good oral care routine.

"I've always had a hygienist, but it wasn't until I came here that I realised what a real hygienist does."

Jane Hansen

Risk of gum disease

The British Dental Health Foundation (BDHF) identified that 95% of us suffers from gum disease. Gum disease is also known as gingivitis and when it becomes more serious it is called periodontitis. Gum disease is caused by the build-up of plaque in your mouth. Plaque contains harmful bacteria which, if not disturbed by regular daily brushing and flossing, can cause gums to become sore, swollen and inflamed, and if left untreated can lead to tooth loss.

You may not be aware that you have gum disease as it is not always painful and some symptoms are not obvious. However, if you notice any of the following; red and swollen gums, bleeding gums after brushing or flossing, receding gums, a strange taste in your mouth, bad breath or loose teeth, then you need to see your dentist or hygienist as soon as possible.

How we can help

Our hygienists will keep a close eye on your teeth and gums and monitor their appearance at every appointment. When we examine your teeth, we look very closely at your gums and measure their health on a scale of 0 to 4 (the average is between 1 and 2). As the number gets higher your risk of dental problems greatly increases. The idea is to keep this score as low as possible, ideally 0.

We can help you by advising you on a good oral care routine and diet and for you to avoid certain food or habits that can increase the chances of gum disease such as smoking.

Patients with the number 3 or 4 will require very regular preventative hygiene treatment to prevent the disease process causing further damage to the bone and gum surrounding each tooth. We measure the gums each time we see you, so we are aware if problems are getting worse, and if further treatment maybe required.
